Here are some tips for foreign guests to order their ideal hair style as easy as possible in Japan. I’m glad it could be helpful for those who have an idea to try Japanese hair salon though there are some burdens like communication problem or worries to do it.
1, Bring favorite or ideal hair style photo you want to refer to
Even though it’s difficult to communicate with Japanese hair dressers, you can tell your ideal hairstyle by showing any photo you want to be. A professional hair dresser, one of my friends says a piece of picture is more helpful than any explanation by word. If you have a photo including your favorite hairstyle in magazine or website, I strongly recommend to bring it as the reference to Japanese hairdressers.
2, Tell the position of hair length you want to keep rather than the specific length to be cut
If you order hair cut in Japanese hair salon, it is important to imagine how long you want to keep for the hair length. One of the easiest ways to explain your ideal hair length is telling the position to indicate the length you want to keep. (For example, the better request is “I want my hair cut up to shoulder-length” <肩の長さまで髪を切って欲しいです> rather than “I want to have my hair cut about 5 cm shorter”<5cmくらい髪を切ってほしいです>.
3, The important word “Mo Sukoshi”
“Mo Sukoshi”<もう少し> meaning of “a little bit more” is very useful word to express your requirement more specific. When you found the length right after getting hair cut is still longer than expected, you can say “Mo Sukoshi Kitte kudasai”<もう少し切ってください>(Please cut my hair a little bit more.) to adjust to your expecting hair style. If the hair color on the picture you bring is dark brown and you feel it’s too dark for yourself, you can say to the hair dresser “Mo Sukoshi Akaruku “<もう少し明るく>(Please make the color lighter) before having hair dyed. Using the word, “Mo Sukoshi~”, you can give the hair dresser much detailed instruction, which is also very helpful for hairdressers to approach the ideal hair style for each guest.
4, Japanese perms are very light
It is says hair types of most Japanese people are easily permed, thus Japanese perm is not as tight as other countries. When foreign guests try a perm in Japan, it may be too gentle for them. If you mind the less effect of Japanese perm, that would be better to ask a tight perm to keep it for longer period.
5, Find reliable hair salons
It is recommended to look for reliable hair salons via websites and make reservation before you visit to Japan if possible. One of the popular websites to introduce hair salons is hot pepper beauty (https://www.recruit-lifestyle.co.jp/english/service/hotpepper-beauty.html *only Japanese) which is also having booking function.
If you have a plan to visit to Hokkaido especially Sapporo, let me introduce my friend’s hair salon :D. It is also appeared in hot pepper beauty and has been offering high quality service with reasonable price for long years. I promise the owner is gentle, kind and friendly person, so she could get rid of worries about Japanese hair salon for foreign guests.
