What to wear in Hokkaido in autumn (Sep to Oct)

Autumn in Hokkaido is so beautiful and it brings delicious foods like vegetables, fruits and seafood to us. It is also my favorite season.
Getting colder in late Aug, we just feel the beginning of autumn from that time on. It falls snow on the top of mountains in Oct, which almost means the season is changing to Winter. It is commonly said that autumn in Hokkaido is short period almost only two months from Sep to Oct.
Below chart is showing highest and lowest temperature in Sapporo for each month in 2016 provided by official website of Japan Meteorological Agency. <!–more–>
As you may aware, the difference between highest and lowest is very large, and in other words, temperature between day time and morning or night is also very different. It is very important to prepare properly clothes for travel in Hokkaido. Most Japanese domestic tourists always concern what to wear for the travel to Hokkaido, so I guess foreign tourists are much annoying this matter due to luck of enough local information in English….

Highest and lowest temperature in Sapporo (2016)

Month Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun
Highest 4.0 8.3 13.5 21.1 29.7  28.4
Lowest  -10.7  -10.9  -6.9  0.1  1.7  8.4
Month Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec
Highest 30.5  31.9 31.1  24.7  14.5  11.9
Lowest  13.4  15.1 9.5  0.5  -7.0 -9.2
In Sep, it is better to wear long sleeves rather than short sleeves and also good to wear long pants rather than short pants. If you are lady and like to wear skirt, it is better to wear stockings with skirt. When you have a plan to go north or east Hokkaido, such as Asahikawa, Kushiro or Obihiro, better to bring cardigan, hooded jacket or hooded sweatshirt to keep warm.
In Oct, we seldom see people wearing short sleeves! 😀 Local people usually wear cardigan, hooded jacket or sweatshirt on long sleeves and additionally put light down jacket or light coat on in case it becomes colder around 10°C. Wool scarf or wool gloves may be useful when you go to see night view especially from the mountain top like Mt. Moiwa in Sapporo. It sometimes falls snow in Oct, but we can still walk with sneakers, not necessary winter shoes.
Below is a sample of suitable clothing by temperature. I hope this helps you to judge what to wear in Hokkaido at the time of preparation for your trip.

Sample of suitable clothes in Hokkaido

Temperature below Sample of suitable clothes in Hokkaido
25°C  Better to prepare long sleeves to put it on short sleeves  for night
20°C  Wear cotton cardigan or cotton jacket on long sleeves
15°C  Start wearing winter clothes such as wool sweater, wool jacket and down made vest on long sleeves
10°C  Wear cotton made coat or light down coat on wool sweater
8°C  Wear wool made coat or light down coat on wool sweater
5°C  Wear wool made coat or thick down coat on wool sweater. Better to put on wool gloves and wool scarf.

The direct bus has been operated the route from New Chitose airport to Asahikawa since Apr 2018 according to official website of Hokuto Kotsu, a major Hokkaido bus company.
Total trip time: Approximately 2h 50min

As stated above, when you go from New Chitose Airport to Asahikawa, the fastest way is Plan A that goes all the way by JR, on the other hand, the cheapest way is Plan D that uses buses from the airport to Asahikawa. Plan E, the direct bus from the airport to Asahikawa is also reasonable choice if you understand Japanese to proceed online booking offered by the local bus company. In the mean time, except the route from New Chitose airport to Sapporo by JR, each ticket by JR or bus provides special discount price for the round trip. If you already have a plan to come back to the airport from Asahikawa via same route, those discount round trip tickets are relatively much cheaper than one way ticket.
Train from the airport to Sapporo is often clouded and no available seat. If you want to secure to sit on the seat for 40 min, I recommend to use the bus for this route or pay additional fee for reserved seat for the train.

Bullet train from Tokyo to Hokkaido

You can go to Hokkaido from Tokyo by Hokkaido Shinkansen, (Hokkaido bullet train), however, there is still under construction on its route from Shin Hakodate Hokuto, in the south part of Hokkaido to Sapporo, the biggest city in Hokkaido. In case you want to reach Sapporo by train, need to transfer the bullet train named “Hayabusa” to the limited express train at Shin Hakodate Hokuto station. *It is scheduled the route for the bullet train from Shin Hakodate Hokuto to Sapporo will be available in 2030)
It takes approximately 4 hours from Tokyo to Shin Hakodate Hokuto by bullet train. For further trip to Sapporo, it takes another 3.5 hours by the limited express train after changing trains at Shin Hakodate Hokuto station. Move from Tokyo to Sapporo by train requires more than 7.5 hours totally, which may seem not attractive for most tourists. One of good points to use train is more punctual than flight especially in winter that is possibly affected by weather condition like heavy snow. Besides, Hokkaido bullet train has started its operation since Mar 2017, and so, most people have not tried it yet. If you have chance to ride on it, it must be additional great memory on your Hokkaido trip!

Getting from Tokyo to Hokkaido by cheaper flights

Not a few people go to Hokkaido via Tokyo by Japanese domestic flight. Flight from Tokyo (Narita or Haneda) to Sapporo (New Chitose airport) is assumed as the busiest air route in Japan, so you have many choices for the flight. Generally speaking, travel by air is more expensive than by train or by ship, however, flights from Tokyo to Sapporo are operated by several aviation companies including LCCs which are offering cheaper ticket.
There are two airports in near Tokyo area. One is Narita airport mostly operated for international flight, which is located in Chiba prefecture, one hour away from Tokyo downtown by train. The other is Haneda airport mainly for domestic flights. It takes approximately 20 minutes from Shinagawa station in Tokyo to the airport by train .
In case you land at Narita from your own country, and go to New Chitose airport without stay in Tokyo area, flight from Narita to New Chitose is more convenient than that from Haneda to New Chitose. If you have plan to stay in Tokyo before going to Hokkaido, boarding the flight from Haneda to New Chitose is better choice because you can save more money and time for the transportation from Tokyo to the airport.

From Tokyo(Narita) to New Chitose airport

Especially recommend to those who arrive at Narita airport by international flight and plan to leave Narita soon without any stay in Tokyo area before the trip to Hokkaido. Narita airport is located at Tokyo suburb, which requires approximately 1 hour from Tokyo by airport coach or train.
Use LCCs such as Jet Star Japan, Vanilla-Air and Spring airlines
• Jet Star Japan http://www.jetstar.com/jp/en/home
• Vanilla-Air https://www.vanilla-air.com/en/
• Spring Airline https://en.ch.com/

From Tokyo(Haneda) to new Chitose airport

Especially recommend those who stay in Tokyo before the trip to Hokkaido. You can move from Tokyo (Shinagawa) to Haneda airport for approximately 20 minutes by train.
Use budget airlines such as Skymark and Airdo

2 great conveyor belt sushi restaurants Sapporo local people love

Most Hokkaido local people love seafood, therefore the quality of conveyor belt sushi in Hokkaido has been kept at very high level. Among the conveyor belt sushi restaurants in Hokkaido, those which located in Sapporo are especially facing fierce competition each other, which enables to offer much reasonable and tasty Sushi than other part of Japan.
Below two are the conveyor belt sushi restaurants Sapporo local people especially love.

Nemuro Hanamaru
As many tourists may know, a popular conveyor belt sushi restaurant, Nemuro Hanamaru has a branch store located in the shopping mall directly linked to Sapporo station. Its convenient location and good reputation about the taste of Sushi are always attracting a lot of people, both tourists and locals. Once you enter the restaurant, would feel the energetic mood like Japanese fish market. Nemuro Hanamaru offers not only delicious Sushi, but also such special atmosphere. Because many customers make long ques at lunch time in the weekend that usually let them wait more than one hour, it would be better to avoid coming at noon to 1:00 p.m. for those who dislike lining up.
Affiliated restaurant of Nemuro Hanamaru, Shiki Hanamaru is not a conveyor belt sushi restaurant but Sushi bar having counter seats like traditional Sushi bar and table seats, though the price range of Sushi is not far different from conveyor belt sushi restaurants. The cheapest is JPY 240 for one plate. The restaurant also serves other Japanese dishes in addition to Sushi and even Sake produced in Hokkaido.

Nagoyaka tei
Fresh fish as Sushi material and a lot of dishes other than Sushi by Nagoyaka tei always attract a lot of local people including kids. HQ of Nagoyaka tei is located in Kushiro city, east Hokkaido which has one of the famous ports in Japan, so You can exactly enjoy such fresh and big Sushi there.
One of the popular Sushi for Nagoyaka tei is “Kobore Ikura (こぼれイクラ)”. As the name of itself (Kobore means overflowed and Ikura means salmon roe), you can enjoy its taste and appearance. When it is served, there is an performance given from the restaurant sfaff to you 🙂 Nagoyaka tei’s major customer is local people and it doesn’t have branches in Sapproro city center. Hassamu branch, Fukuzumi branch, Shiroishi Hondori branch and Aeon Hassamu branch which are accessible by subway would be convenient for tourists.

The advantages of conveyor belt sushi restaurants in Hokkaido compared to other area of Japan are the freshness and price. Each restaurant’s average price would not more than JPY 2,000 for each lunch or dinner.

Hokkaido local foods and drinks vol.3

“Sujiko” taste rice ball (Middle in above photo)
There are a lot of foods and drinks sold only in Hokkaido.
For example, it would be difficult to find “Sujiko” rice ball in other areas in Japan except Hokkaido. Rice ball is very familiar as a traditional food for most Japanese people, which generally includes pickled plums(Umeboshi), fish flakes(Katsuobushi) or salmon in its inside. In Hokkaido, “Sujiko”, salmon roe is also very popular taste of rice ball. “Sujiko” is quite similar to “Ikura” which is also salmon roe and often eaten in Sushi, but “Sujiko” with a bit salty taste rather matches white rice.

Guarana (Right in above photo)
Guarana is a famous beverage as a drink sold only in Hokkaido.
It is similar to the taste of Coca Cola, on the other hand, Guarana has original aroma that attracts many fans after tried. As there is almost no chance to encounter Guarana aside from Hokkaido, I recommend to try it once you visit to Hokkaido.

Dairy products(Left in above photo)
Phrases such as “Using milk produced in Hokkaido ” have been seen for the desserts sold even outside Japan. If you visit to Hokkaido, I especially recommend to try milk itself, ice creams and desserts using fresh cream. It is often said even ordinary milk or ice cream sold at general local supermarkets and convenience stores in Hokkaido are very tasty. In Hokkaido, Japan’s No 1 milk producing land, you can easy to get cheaper and higher quality dairy foods.

Three kinds of foods, “Sujiko” taste rice ball, Guarana and Dairy products I explained above are all available at Seico mart, a Hokkaido local convenience store chain. Seico mart is very familiar to local people for long years and its outlets are located at Sapporo and country side in Hokkaido. Comparing to other major convenience stores such as seven eleven and family mart, Seico mart is especially dealing Hokkaido local products with its original brand. If you visit to Seico mart, can also see many kinds of dried fishes introduced in my previous post, Hokkaido local foods and drinks vol.2. It can be also said very convenient shop to get small souvenirs on the last day of the travel.
You can easily find that the Seico mart’s appearance with orange color is standing out!

Ajisai at Hokkaido Ramen Dojo

I found a delicious ramen shop which becomes one of my favorite ramen restaurants in Hokkaido.
Ajisai, this ramen restaurant was born in Hakodate, in south Hokkaido more than 80 years ago, which now has some branch shops including at Ramen Dojo in new Chitose airport.
Hokkaido is a popular place to enjoy Ramen, besides, Hakodate is especially famous for ramen with Salt taste (Shio ramen). I surely recommend to try Shio ramen at Ajisai as well.

The soup with clear colour is not greasy and light flavored as it looks. It is not strongly flavored, but the soup with stock taken from Konbu, pork and chicken is so tasty that I finished it all. Those who don’t like food with thick taste such as most ramens would be able to accept Ajisai’s and I exactly recommend them to try it!

Eat Sushi in Sapporo at lower price

You can eat fresh Sushi at lower price in Sapporo than other areas in Japan such as Tokyo or Osaka. If your budget for eating is limited or you have many foods to try in Hokkaido, I recommend to eat Sushi for lunch rather than dinner. Because many Sushi restaurants offer lunch set meal at chaper price than that for dinner, and meal’s volume is not too much, in other words, you would still have some space in your stomach to enjoy desserts in the afternoon following lunch.

Sushi restaurant, “Kiyohira” is one of my recommend to eat Sushi for lunch in the central of Sapporo. It is located at the basement floor of ANA hotel Sapporo just next to Sapporo station for JR and subway. Even though the restaurant offering authentic taste and atmosphere as a traditional Sushi restaurant is located in the one of famous hotel groups in Japan, the average price for lunch at Kiyohira is almost same level as ordinary restaurants in Sapporo.

A seafood bawl I ate last time was JPY 1,260. Lots of fresh seafood such as tuna, squid, salmon, scallop, etc. are on the rice. (There are some other lunch set meals less than JPY 1,500, according to the official website)

For another option to eat Sushi at lower cost, I recommend to visit to restaurants categorized as “海鮮居酒屋”, casual types of seafood restaurants or restaurants operated by fish dealers.
“Sakana Isshin” owned by a company with many years achievement in seafood industry offers fresh and cheaper Sushi as well as Sashimi, grilled fish and even desserts like Hokkaido milk ice cream. It is located in Tokyu department store at very close place to Sapporo station, which is easy to find for tourists. You can find menus through their official website

Its seafood bawl with big prawn on the rice was also around JPY 1,200 (Sorry, I forgot exact price…)
