Now is the time to introduce my favorite 100 yen shop, Seria after posted two majors of 100 yen shop, Daiso and Cando more than a year ago. I finally found Seria, the Japanese second largest 100 shop chain at Sapporo central area when I stayed in Sapporo for new year holiday this year. Read More
Seria offers various selection of stylish goods to target especially for ladies. The shop looks like a cafe or a shop to sell interior goods rather than 100 yen shop, which has been attracting many female customers. Seria’s DIY goods, house decorating items and materials for hand-made are well known as quite useful and reasonable items among people who love something to do self customizing .
When I visited Seria at first time, surprised the quality of those products and cannot believe all of them are sold at 100 yen only. Above all, daily use products and kitchen items like dishes and cups with simple design would be never like products of 100 yen value. Seria is often introduced as a fashionable 100 yen shop chain in Japanese magazines. Mag cups in the picture below is especially recommended as the goods we should buy at Seria.
Some cosmetics which are sold at Seria have been also getting high popularity in Japan. Those are 100 yen (Exc. Tax) only as well, but the biggest cosmetics ranking website in Japan, @cosme appreciates the quality of some items. Especially, nail polish and concealer are known as highly-rated items.
Most of items sold at Seria are made-in Japan products, so it might be good place to buy casual souvenirs for your friends or colleagues. Foods are very limited at Seria while other 100 yen shops offer lots of choices. If you look for something to eat such as snacks, candy, chocolate, drinks and seasonings, etc, I recommend to go to Daiso or Cando.

I got a question about reasonable way to get cheaper winter outfit in this blog’s comment, so took research by myself and asked my friends for better answer in these a few days. It might not be the best answer, but I hope information could be helpful for you. Read More
1, Get winter clothes at second hand shop
Second hand items are usually cheaper than new one, then it could be good way to look for cheaper clothes at second hand shop. Sapporo central area has some shops. My friends especially recommends following shops as these are located at convenient places for tourists and this second hand shop group has been popular for local people in many years. Second hand shop sometimes sells vintage items as well as luxury used brand items which are much expensive than new ones commonly sold at ordinally stores. Please pay attention that the all items in the second hand shop is not always cheaper than new items.
2. Get winter clothes at fast-fashion brands like Uniqlo and GU
Uniqlo and GU which are operated by a same company offers seasonal items such as winter jacket, wool coat and wool sweater, etc with lower price though the quality is very high. Both of them have e-commerce website, then you can check the rough range of the price for each winter items.
By the way, Uniqlo’s ultra light down jacket has been especially getting high popularity in Japan as it is very light but enough warm to spend in winter. After the end of the winter, you can easily fold the jacket and keep putting it into the nylon bag which is attached with the jacket until the next use. It is very handy, just smaller sized than a magazine. If you don’t mind purchasing something new outfit in Sapporo, this jacket is one of the recommended option since it is not bulky, easy to carry and even easy to keep it at small space in your home.
Uniqlo and GU are both located at ESTA, a shopping mall just next to Sapporo station. From 5th floor to 8th floor, ESTA also has some other cheaper clothing stores, shoes store and interior shop.

3. Anti slip item to walk on the frozen road
If you worry about walking on the frozen road or on the snow, it may be a good way to buy anti slip item to attatch on your shoes. Though Hokkaido local people normally change to winter shoes which have non-slip sole after snow fall around early December, I don’t think tourists also need such shoes for temporal stay in Sapporo and other cities central area in Hokkaido. Anti slip items are usually sold around JPY 1,000 at many places like the airport, JR stations, subway stations and convenience stores. I believe the item is enough helpful rather than purchasing new shoes.
4. Rent winter clothes and items
If you can communicate in Japanese, this website for the rental of winter clothes might be attractive. http://opt.hokkaidotour.net/m/service/rentalwear/
I understand purchasing winter clothes looks somehow waste of money for tourists from tropical countries, but rental clothes is not popular in Sapporo so far… I will update the post once get any new solution about how to get winter clothes with lower cost in Sapporo.

Not only Hokkaido local companies, Japanese major beverage companies also sell area limited products in Hokkaido. Drinks introducing here are all available at supermarkets or convenient stores, so you can enjoy them at the hotel room during travel or even bring back to your home country as one of souvenirs.
Sapporo Classic by Sapporo Breweries Ltd.
Hearing the words “Sapporo”, not a few people may come up with Sapporo beer first. Though it is named as “Sapporo”, most Sapporo beer brand products are sold all over Japan, even seen many places in the world. The exception is Sapporo Classic and you can only buy it in Hokkaido. Sapporo Classic is a beer produced from 100% malt and not including auxiliary ingredients, which especially matches made-in-Hokkaido foods such as fresh seafoods and vegetables.
Convenience stores in Sapporo are keeping this product as ordinary items, so you can easily get them.
Katsugen by Megmilk Snow Brand
Who knows Katsugen? Anyone knows what Katsugen is? People excepting those who are from Hokkaido would have no idea about this drink, but it is very familiar to Hokkaido local. Many people say the taste is similar to Yakult, but it still has original fragrance and flavor along with bit sournesss and sweetness. The taste with not too sweet has been attracting many fans. We can find Katsugen at supermarkets and convenience stores in Hokkaido.
Fire milk taste limited in Hokkaido by Kirin Company
When I went to Asahikawa, found a Hokkaido limited edition of popular brand canned coffee in the vending machine at Sapporo station. Fire milk taste limited in Hokkaido looked as usual types of canned coffee sold everywhere, but it was actually described as Hokkaido limited on the can. Sugar and milk added into the coffee are made-in-Hokkaido and the canned coffee is sold only in Hokkaido. Milk produced in Hokkaido is used in various tasty products and even seen them in other countries, meanwhile, sugar produced in Hokkaido is not as popular as milk. In addition to rich taste of Hokkaido milk and fresh cream, the mildly sweet sugar are making the nice taste. Fire milk taste limited in Hokkaido is a mild taste milk coffee, so those who don’t like the bitter taste of coffee could even try it.
I guess there are many fans of Japanese Manga in the world. When you go to bookstores in Japan, you may be surprised the quantities of Mangas they are dealing with.
Even if you don’t understand Japanese language, should be excited to the original edition of your favorite Manga once you take it by your own hands. If you have no idea how to find the manga you want, book store clerks kindly help you to find out it.
In Japan, each book store sells not only books, such as novels, magazines, Manga, travel guides and language learning books, but also keeps postcards, diaries and various kinds of stationeries. When it comes to drop at book store, I always spend more than one hour, staying there much longer than expected. Under current situation around book stores in Japan, more and more small sized book stores close down and large sized book stores are surviving while e-book is becoming popular. Below listed book stores are large sized book stores dealing wide range of items in Sapporo down town.
Aside from ordinary book store, I also recommend Manga fans to go to second hand book store.
Book Off (Sapporo Minami 2 Jo branch) which sells second-hand books such as Manga, novels, and even used CD and DVD is a store I visit every time when I go back to Sapporo. All Manga in the shelves as looked like brand-new are second hand and much cheaper than new one. Some popular Manga are sold as a set like including vo.1 to vo.10. For those who don’t mind second hand items, Book off would be a great book store to get many manga by cheaper price.
Walking one minute from Book Off (Sapporo Minami 2 Jo branch), you would find Toranoana (Sapporo branch) which deals anime goods like figures, fanzines and other items Otaku usually loves. Unless anime fans go to Akihabara, could get special Manga in Sapporo which is usually not sold at usual bookstores. Animate (Sapporo branchi) is just located to Toranoana ‘s neighbor, which also deals plenty of books, Manga, anime character goods, DVD and games.

Generally speaking, there are not so many restaurants or shops where people need to wait in a long queue in Sapporo. It’s because most restaurants in Sapporo serve nice foods and any restaurant usually meets customer’s high expectation. Local people has no much experience to line up to enter restaurants, rather reluctant to spend more time before eating. But of course, some of restaurants or shops in Sapporo also requires queues because of prominent good reputation by many local customers.
Tokachi Daimyo Sapporo Esta Branch, offering Japanese traditional dessert is one of such popular shops that generate queues. Waiting time per person is not very long, but customers coming one after another create long queue in front of the shop every weekend. You can see the process Taiyaki is being made through a window before yours are baked, and of course, you can take out the freshly baked one. The characteristics of Taiyaki produced by Tokachi Daimyo are crispy surface and sweet bean paste made by red bean from Tokachi area of Hokkaido.
Taiyaki is a Japanese traditional popular dessert for long years throughout Japan. It’s not a Hokkaido specialty, but Taiyaki by Tokachi Daimyo has been ranked as No.1 of “Most recommend Taiyaki” by Nikkei news paper, one of the most popular Japanese news paper. I also recommend even people who have tried Taiyaki at other shops before or people who are tend to avoid lining up. The taste would not disappoint you!
Ranked as No.1 Taiyaki in Nikkei news paper

100 Yen Shop Can Do Esta branch is a shop I visit every time when I go shopping around Sapporo Ekimae area.
As it is located in the same building as uniqro and bic camera, a large electrical appliance store, which is directly linked to subway staion, most foreign tourists are also able to find it easily.
The size of 100 Yen Shop Can Do Esta branch is not so big as 100 Yen Shop Daiso-Sapporo Chuo Branch , but most daily used items such as stationary, kitchen goods and beauty and health related items are available at the store. The items I recommend to get here is foods including snacks and even seasonings. If you are interested in cooking Japanese food, you can get basic Japanese seasonings like Wasabi at JPY 108 here without going for a further shopping at any supermarket. Many types of snacks and candies made in Japan are sold, which would be suitable as souvenirs for friends and even for yourself.
Except some excluding items, almost all goods in 100 Yen Shop Can Do Esta branch are sold at 108 yen(inc VAT)as well as other brand of 100 yen shops.

There are a lot of famous cakes, cookies, chocolates and other types of confectionaries in Hokkaido. Among them, NAMA CHOCOLATE by Royce and SHIROI KOIBITO by Ishiya are bought by tourists as souvenirs of Hokkaido or as one of the most popular Japanese snacks.
Compared to NAMA CHOCOLATE and SHIROI KOIBITO which are sold in other areas in Japan, some snacks with tasty and famous for local people are only sold in Hokkaido. Introduceing here is such local special snacks. Those are eaten by local hokkaido people as familiar snacks for long years, on the other hand, would become suitable souvenirs for tourists as Hokkaido’s specialities
Marusei butter sand
Marusei butter sand is a cookie produced by Rokkatei which is one of the famous confectionary shops in Hokkaido. You can enjoy the taste with rich butter cream and raisins sanded by moist cookies. It has been always ranked in top 10 of the most popular snacks, in other word, “must-buy snacks” sold in new Chitose airport.
Marimo Yokan (Marino shaped sweet bean past jelly)
Marimo Yokan is mainly sold at shops around Lake Akan and some shops in Hokkaido area are also dealing with it. It’s shape is resembling Marimo, one of the nationally protected species in Japan. The taste is similar to traditional Yokan, but this unique shape attracts many tourists. As Marimo Yokan is covered by transparent thin rubber, you need to pierce it by a toothpick as if breaking balloon when you take inside out to eat it. This interesting process for eating is also attracting many people.
Introducing here is some Hokkaido local food we cannot get even other areas in Japan.
Those food only available in Hokkaido is very popular for local people with certified taste, so may be reasonable souvenir to your friends as well as eating by yourself.
Dried Komai fish(むしりこまい)
Komai fish is written as 氷下魚 in Chinese character, which means fish under ice. It lives under cold sea , so is common fish for Hokkaido local people though it would not be popular for most Japanese people. The taste of grilled Komai fish is similar to grilled cod fish as both of them belongs to same classification of fish. By the way, this dried Komai fish is often eat when we drink alcohols as the tast mathes Japanese sake or even beer.
Not a few local people like to dip mayonnaise on it. If you have a chance to get dried Komai fish, I recommend to enjoy both original taste and the taste with mayonnaise!
Dried salmon(鮭スティック、とば)
Dried salmon is also very popular snack in Hokkaido, but uncommon food for most Japanese people. If you like seafood especially love raw salmon, try the dried salmon as well! As you see, the colour of salmon between dried one and raw one is different, so you may not notice the dried one is made by salmon at first sight.
The texture of dried salmon is hard, but the more you bite, the better it tastes!
Both dried Komai fish and dried salmon are sold at convenient stores and supermarkets in Hokkaido.
Visiting to local supermarkets is one of interesting activities for me when I go travel abroad. Supermarkets in Japan always keep variety of items, so you could just enjoy looking around store shelves even if don’t buy anything.
It is said a suitable place to get souvenirs such as goods made in Japan, Hokkaido local foods, cosmetics, Japanese alcohols and snacks while you also check current hot seller items sold in Japan. Some supermarkets offer even tax free service which is available for foreign tourists who meet requirements for duty free shopping. If you purchase goods above JPY 5000, please ask shop staff whether you can take advantage of tax free benefit.
